literally the only time the villain is hotter than wyb is when he's playing a cop and his hotness factor is only reduced because he's playing a cop

do you have strong feelings about jewish characters being played by gentiles? i feel like generally if a jew character is either attractive or a good person theyre played by a gentile, and if theyre ugly or evil, then, *finally*, the studio thinks its alright for them to be played by a jew. i was reminded about this by oppenheimer (which is a biopic so it obviously is a little different than treatment of fictional characters) when i realized that 1. cillian murphy, who really is a great actor and did a good job, is NOT jewish, but also 2. oppenheimer's jewishness, despite being at least a little bit important to a story that takes place in the literal holocaust, was put on the back burner in the film so much so that i've seen gentiles on social media talking about oppenheimer as if he were a privileged white guy and nothing more
i think that in a vacuum, a gentile actor who was good at their job and respectful of jewish people and jewish culture, who put a lot of thought into how that character's jewishness would affect the way they interact with the plot and other characters, that they could do a good job. there might even be situations where a gentile played a jewish character better than a jew did because the gentile put the work into the character research and the jew didn't.
that being said, we can't ignore the context of what hollywood has been doing for a while now, which is casting gentiles when there's a jewish character we're supposed to be sympathetic to or who is supposed to be attractice, and casting jews when the character is supposed to be a stereotype, a villain, or ugly. a lot of jewish actors end up changing their name to sound "less jewish" or getting nose jobs to look "less jewish" in order to get hired. the ones who do get hired tend to be white or white presenting and able to pass as a gentile if needed.
so it's like. could a gentile give a good performance of a jewish character? yes. should we keep casting gentiles as jewish characters because they'll do a good job while jewish actors continue to get passed over for parts? no.
